i have a 70s type fireplace i cant afford a new one its marble any ideas on how to revamp it?

Marble can be acid-etched to bring back the original shine. There are products available, but, if you can afford it, get a professional to do it. Check with your local home improvement store for marble restorer and read the directions carefully and thoroughly. Have the fire bricks inspected and replace them too if necessary.

You may leave all of the orignal stuff intact, if you like it. An insert will make it extremely efficient, standard fireplaces are very inefficient and spew out a lot of pollutants.
Sometimes a nice wood trim around the outer edges, if the marble does up the sides, adds accent. Antique mantels with "legs" that go all the way to the floor are neat. You may wish to peruse fireplace sites that show their wares in a finished setting.
