Norplant is a contraceptive that works similarly to traditional oral birth control by giving the body a level of estrogen that "tricks" the body into believing that it is already pregnant, and therefore an new fertilized egg will not implant itself into the placenta. Norplant resembles small cylinders that are placed under the skin and release the hormones gradually, usually over the course of a couple of years. It is a birth control option for those that believe that they would not be able to take "the pill" at the same time every day (which is critical for efficacy)

It's a plastic implant that is no bigger then a match stick. it is inserted under the skin in the upper arm. The implant has progestin in it. And progestin is a hormone similar to the hormone released from the ovaries. And how it works is it keeps the eggs from releasing from the ovaries. And it thickens the cervical mucus so no sperm can get in and get to your egg in case an egg does release. Go to http://www.plannedparenthood.org/birth-control-pregnancy/birth-control/the-implant.htm it will tell you more about it!
