Start off at a community college or junior college those are alot cheaper, and the best part you get the same classes for about half the price. 12 units is considered a full load so I always try to take 6 units of fun enrichment classes and 6 of classes I actually need which takes a little longer but combats the getting burnt out affect. Plus if you are worried about the financial part most all colleges offer financial aid and it ends up paying you to go to school. Good Luck

Going to college in your case depends on how you truly feel about it. If you make good money and want to go back to potentially make more then take a look at if it will help you. For example, my wife wants to become a school teacher. In order to do so she'd be out of work for several years and would have to take out plenty of loans, all to take a pay cut. In her case, it's not worth it.
As far as staying interested, that would depend largely on your motivation and desire. A college degree will open many doors for you, but in some fields if the door is already open a college degree is pointless.

I was essentially in the same situation as yourself when I went back to school. I enjoyed school when I went back because I was more mature and had experiences that I could related to my education. College can be a good and rewarding experience educationally, emotionally and psychologically as when you finish, you have a new found sence of accomplishment. I would say do it!
As far as staying interested, find something that you love. It's never fun when you're studying or doing something that doesn't interest you. If you're not really sure what to do, find a career center and take one of those career profile tests. That way it will match you with careers that you like and educational paths to take.
If you're going to continue to work and go to school and are worried about burn out...take it one step at a time. Start part-time and work your way into it. Nobody says you have to do it all at once.

If you are going to college for the $$, forget it because without a sincere career focus, you will end up mediocre and the $$ flow later will be mediocre too.
The real reason to go to college is because you are driven about something (this is so NOT high school). Only the driven truly succeed. I know people with multiple degrees who are poorer than construction workers because they are mediocre and have little to offer any employer.
If you can't find a real motivation for going, don't . . . the cost will probably not be worth it.

The ONLY reason to go to college is because you want to improve your station in life. Noone should go to college beacause they feel the need to or don't know what else to do.
I waited 6 years to go to college, and when I did, I did so with a purpose. I wanted a science degree, got it, and am now working towards my PhD.
If you don't think you would be successful in college right now, question why you want to go in the first place. If you have a purpose, focus on that , and how badly you want to succeed. Hopefully desire will overcome "Burn-out".
