Try also running a spyware program to see if your computer has a lot of spyware or adware slowing it down. If that doesn't work try the following:
The first thing you should do is find out what is peaking the cpu.
push ctrl + alt + del to and choose task list or task manager. In the task manager, click on the processes tab on the top. Then look at the cpu column and it will show what percentage of usage of the cpu is being applied to each process.
Find the process(s) that are using the most resources and research them on google to find out what they are and if they are necessary. type the name of the process exactly how you see it in the task manager into a google search and you will find out what it is.
This will take a bit of time if there are many processes running at the same time but it is worth it.
Next, once you have the list of unnecessary processes, go to your start menu -> run and type "msconfig" (without the quotes)
this will open up the system configuration utility. click the start up tab. This shows you all of the applications that start and run when you computer boots. Compare your list to this list and uncheck the items you have identified as unnecessary.
If you are ever unsure about what something is in the start up section, DO NOT UNCHECK IT.
I suggest doing one at a time to be safe, and reboot you computer each time you uncheck a box. This will take longer but is safer. each time you reboot a system config. window will open asking you if you want to save your changes or revert back to the way it was. If everything booted ok, save your changes and repeat the process as many times as it takes.

You may need to defragment your puter....
One should do a disk cleanup everyday and defrag two or three times a week if the computer is used moderately. Try this.
You may need to do a Disk Cleanup..and be sure you have all the boxes checked....
Defrafg your C drive or what ever is your
main harddrive... Make sure you have selected the C Drive.... This is called a Disk Defragmenter...
Go to : Start...
programs..
accessories...
system tools..
Do this often...
Try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:
start
programs
accessories
systems tools
system restore
This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.
