I believe that it is something that happened when they were babies or small children, that scars them for life. I think finding what it is first that can help you face your fears. Find the core of the reason the face it. Like heights, my mother can't even ride a horse without freaking out. I think it's a feeling of "Loss of Control". I think if your parents were extremely strict to where you weren't allowed outside. When you are finally given control of your life you are hesitant. WHen you get on something high, you have this sense of having no control and so you think it is inevitable to fall and will panic. I am surprised you can ride in a plane. I guess it has something to do with you not seeing the flying being done. Like if I'm in the back seat of a car I'm fine, but in the front passenger, I am white nuckling the handle in fear of what the driver is doing. I'm sorry if I confused you more. I'm not a doctor, but have had a lot of experience in certain fears in my family and myself. Some people do drastic things to get over their fears. Like sky diving. SOme take little steps and some just hang on to their fears for life.

A fear of heights is actually a normal defense to keep us alive. The fear of height is not really a fear of the altitude or falling, it's a fear of impacting the ground at a high speed. I have a fear of widths.

Me and you are inseperatable in this extraordinary case study.
It's the final frontier in paramanormal mystery that is above and beyond all other mysteries. You have this exciting fear because you are wondering about the accidental, great, fall which leads to the (deep) impact which no eye has seen or no ear has heard since the "EverlastingGaze" by 144,000 great fanatics of a lengendary fearless five carried over by "one."

Fear of heights is a natural reaction! Falling CAN kill us! To overcome unwarranted fear is learning to trust your own ability to reason the risks and make the decision to trust yourself!

The big "THUDD' when you hit bottom.
BUTT! Seriously fear of falling from a dangerous height is very common, I too suffered from it at one time and now do construction work at any height necessary.
I found out that this fear comes from various factors. Such as (1) Dying, (2) Uncontrollable factors such as wind, or the idiot standing behind you. (3) Lack of confidence, in you personally being able to keep yourself safe because of lack of education about equipment and techniques on dealing with and being placed on a height that can kill or maim you.
There are more which you can figure out for yourself.
Basically you can overcome the fear of height by educating yourself to "equipment and techniques on dealing with and being placed on a height that can kill or maim you" as I said before.
My favorite technique goes hand in hand with my believe in God.
