If you have tools at top of your page, click & click again to windows update. After page stops loading from windows (also msn site) notice the empty search bar at top right. Type these words into your search space - windows 98 update downloads - & hit search. Windows will give you several options to help you. You can also put in the search bar- check and update my computer -. This website has made it very easy for me to correct & fix things that go wrong-same thing happened to me last week & windows fixed & a good thing since it does detect what system and version of windows we are using.
You can also open the windows website by going to start, setting then programs and find it listed there.

Good Luck !!!

Shutting down and rebooting the PC doesn't reset the Modem.

Unplug the modem, wait 30 seconds, then power it back up. It will run a self-test routine then attempt to reconnect. If that doesn't do it, then open your browser (even offline), and delete your temporary cookies and file cache. If you use Internet Explorer, "Tools" - "Internet Options" - "Delete Cookies" - Delete files" - "OK", then run your Windows ScanDisk and Defrag and reboot. This will take a while, have patience.
If that doesn't fix it...

After you've done all that, call your I.S.P. and have them walk you thru pinging your I.P. address.

Try to update your operating system.

Why do you still use Windows 98? Do you like it so much?
Windows Xp is better than 98, try to install xp!!
