On Myspace and indeed this site too. I see stupid spelling mistakes and capitals in the middle of words!! When did it become cool to appear uneducated? And do these kids spell like that at school?

you may want to nicely be mature, yet without being a teenager you have not any adventure for the adversities existence throws at you. no matter if you stay a normal existence as an human being you'll bypass over your youthful years. purely savour your teenage years, flow out and characteristic some interesting with people your age. you'd be suprised at how different 17 three hundred and sixty 5 days olds may be mature too.

It's just "chat speak." Chat speak being slang used online by many computer users.
There is also 133t speak which is slang used by hackers and by gamers on multiplayer game servers and in chatrooms. 133t is the slang word for "leet" which is short for elite, meaning the best. 133t speak usually consists of numbers replacing vowels in words (example: A=0, E=3), but occasionally the numbers will replace a consonant. It cannot really be spoken or handwritten — as such it is considered to be an Internet language dependent on a keyboard.

I think it is because of the shortcuts they've been taught on the computers and text messaging on cell phones. Yes, it causes problems in school. I know some adults who have lowered themselves to this short cut method and when they attempt to write something on paper it comes naturally to them to write the short cuts/abbr. and they have a very difficult time figuring out which is right. They are all dumbing themselves down. Although, some would consider me dumb because I don't understand the majority of the abbreviations and misspellings that they use. Who knows anymore. People today are too accepting of change.... Good or bad.

I don't think it is to appear uneducated. I have a 15-year-old daughter who could get a job with the Defense Department given her typing speed and ability to decode messages. It is just the culture, much like lip piercings and rap music. Her schoolwork is immaculate, with correctly spelled words, proper punctuation, and sentence structure. But online?! A different animal completely.
I liken it to my grandmother's impression of my mother saying, "He's dreamy!" as she swooned over Frank Sinatra and wore red lipstick...and my mother's reaction to me screaming my head off as the Beatles sang on the Ed Sullivan show, and in later years, when I wore embroidered bell bottoms and cursed (gasp!) "the establishment".
Somehow, we all survived. I have taught my daughters how valuable communications skills are, and I think they'll make it out of this phase intact. I don't know whether to laugh or cringe when I try to envision what THEIR kids will shock THEM with.

I see it across the board. Funnily enough, "alot" isn't a word.
"a" and "lot" are, but "alot"? Nope.
No one takes the time to hit spell check on the internet, or to look up things they're not sure off. It's easier that way. As for things like "ru" and "l33t", that's just infantile and dumb. Dumb, dumb, dumb. It is however, hip. As was MC Hammer.
And cocaine.
L33t, MC Hammer, Cocaine. All hip. All dumb.
Don't be dumb.

One should be careful of criticizism because one might appear to suffer the same perceived ignorance.

They do it because they want to seem like the things that are important to older people are not important to them because they're too cool. It's an attitude problem.

I'm not sure why they do it, but it bugs the living hell out of me. I'm sure they've grown so accustomed to spelling that way, that it affects the way they write at school.
It's not cool to be dumb!

I think they have become accustomed to abbreviating on text messaging and don't realize that extending it to other situations just makes them look as if they don't know any better.
