I need to know for my fantasy basketball team. One of my players in "out indefinitely", so I need to decide to trade him or what.

Additional information: It's Steve Francis for the NY Nicks, so he's not one of my premere players but still I don't need any dead wieght.

It means they don't know when he will be back, could be a month, could be for the season. With a sprained ankle, it should not be more than a week, in fact Yahoo Sports says "he may not even miss a single game."

Professional way of conveying "we're not sure". Injuries can be wide in severity and depending on the person, can widely vary in healing/recovery/rehabilitation. It may be an injury that does not fully reveal how severe it is right away and so they can't make a definite window of recovery. It may also preclude to how carefully and slow they want to take a guys rehab...they can't fully judge how much rehab is needed until they can first prove it's fully healed. In the end, it also includes stamina. It may be an injury that disallows them from keeping in performance shape. This is why some "out indefinitly" turns into "out for the season", especially towards the middle or end of the season. They can't fully heal and be to the level to play at the required pro level so they will just IL them until next year.

Out indefinitely means they can't give you a definate time frame for how long the player will be out. They need physical therapy and it all depends on how well and how quickly they do at it. Also they don't know for certain how well something will heal, when it will heal. For example they know a sprain takes a set amount of time to heal. So I think it is safe to say that the player will be out for the season. I highly doubt that you are going to trade your injured player for anyone decent. IMO you are stuck with the guy.

Out indefinitely means the player is injured for the season, but it might threaten the players career, like Terrel Brandon, for example.
You anit going to get much for a player that is out indefinitly, in fact you might not be able to trade him.

That's just another way of saying until further notice. Or until we figure out how long we want you to stay out. Or until we come to a decision. All of these are the same thing......... We'll let you know
