Does anyone know of anybody actually miscarrying after one? I have made up my mind not to have it, Im 36 on Friday, 12 weeks pregnant and know all the statistics, but was wondering if anyone actually knows anyone personally that has had problems after having one? Thanks

I'm also 36 years old and 16 weeks pregnant. My OB offered me to do the amnio just because of my age alone...DH and I declined it. I think there's no reason for an amnio since there's no cure for this in case they found out it's positive. Amnio also causes miscarriage. By the time your doc told you if it was neg or pos, your baby is also gone. So what's if the result was negative, for me doing the amnio is more risky than my age so I won't do it no matter what. We're going to keep the baby regardless of his condition, babies are gift from God and nobody has the right to terminate my pregnancy. I have a very irregular period and always had trouble conceiving (actually I wouldn't conceive without the help of infertility pills) and now that I have conceived, I am going to keep it and I won't allow anybody or anything to hurt my baby. Hope this helps. BTW, 36 is just a number so I wouldn't worry about it. I had a teacher who gave birth when she was 40 and the baby was perfectly normal.

I don't actually know of anyone having a miscarriage after having an amnio, but I have heard there are risks when having one. I went through the genetic counseling about that, and heard all of the risks with having one, and what the whole process was. That is why I decided not to have one either. I'm 21, so my risks aren't too high, but my fiance's brother has Down Syndrome, and my AFP test came back positive for DS, so they wanted to do an amnio on me. My fiance and I both decided that I would not get one, and just get a level 2 ultrasound instead. They can sometimes tell from the level 2 ultrasound if the baby has DS or not, by measuring certain parts of the body (arms, head and neck). It ended up that my due date was off by a few weeks, so they had me take the AFP test over and it turned out the baby doesn't have DS. Either way, we would love this baby more than anything, so why risk it?! That's just my opinion though. I hope everything works out for the best for you! Just remember, those AFP tests can be off a lot...they aren't 100% accurate.
Good luck and congratulations!! :)

I am 36 years old and I went through the exact same thing that you are going through. My doctor kept on stressing me about getting the amino and I said No because I do not trust having a giant needle in my stomach and risks loosing my baby. He said that you are 36 yrs. old and maybe you should think about it more. I told him why does he keep forcing me to do something that I do not want to do. I told him that I am not that old too make a big issue out of it.
Women are in they late 40's having healthy babies. So he said OK, if your baby has down syndrome wouldn't you want too know. I told him that abortion was not an option and I will deal with what ever the situation is. I recently had my baby Nov. 2nd and he is healthy and beautiful, there is nothing wrong with my baby.
Do not do it, because you do not have too and you will have a healthy baby. As long as you are healthy, eating healthy, taking your prenantal pills etc. you should not worry about the Amino crap... My doctor scared me for nothing and my baby is fine. Good Luck to you... Congratulations on your pregnancy...

I seen my doc on Monday, and I refused the prescreen and the amnio right away. Its not worth it for me. He told me there was a 1/200 chance you could miscarry from it. I'm not willing to take that chance. I'm 33 and considered high risk due to high blood pressure in previous pregnancy. It took me 4 years to get pregnant with my first and 5 years for this one (currently 15 weeks along) and its not worth taking a chance. He said if you are a worrier by nature, then you should not do the amnio. Too much pressure for a pregnant woman. It does not matter to me how this baby turns out. I'll love him/her regardless. Best of luck to you and your baby.

I don't know anyone who has lost a baby because of amnio. There is a 1 in 400 chance of miscarrying. If you chose not to do it then why are you asking this question? Just wondering.

Ive personally dont know anyone whom has misscarried after having amnio! Best of luck in any decision you go.
It doesnt matter your age when it comes to a birth defect it can happen to any one and time... age isnt the only factor genetics are to. If you choose to comfirm or rule out for your peice of mind then go for it!! But then again if your are more scared of the amnio itself then dont!

A friend of mine had one. No problems due to it. But because she had one they were better able to prepare for her handicapped son. He had heart problems and had they not done one he would have died at birth. Please think of the baby. It may not change how you feel, but it could help your doctor to know how to handle things in the delivery room. Good luck
