The NBA switched because the previous ball they were using were indoor balls only, the synthetic one's have an indoor/outdoor feel. That means they can sell more balls to the general public, the people like us who sometimes hoop outside at the park. Now, we can use the same balls the pro's use without worring about damaging a leather ball. With people like us buying the ball they can make more money.

The short answer is that the ball is technologically advanced in a few ways. The new ball, manufactured by Spalding, features a new design and a new material that together offer better grip, feel, and consistency than the current leather ball.
It features Spalding’s "Cross Traxxion" technology, an entirely new design and material. The design is comprised of two interlocking, cross-shaped panels rather than the eight oblong panels found on traditional basketballs. As a result, there is more material coverage. The material is a microfiber composite with moisture management that provides superior grip and feel throughout the course of a game. So when the ball gets sweat on it, it won't lose its grip.
Also, last year's NBA ball (the one that has been used since 1970) needed a break-in period since it was leather. The new composite material eliminates the need for that. And since they are made in this composite material, they are more consistant, they don't vary as much, as leather basketballs.
One of the previous commenters said that this ball is cheaper to buy. I really don't think that's true considering the amount of technology that is built in to this new design. And they didn't just make the change on a whim. The NBA and Spalding subjected the ball to a rigorous evaluation process that included laboratory and on-court testing. Every NBA team received the new ball and had the opportunity to use it in practice. The ball also was tested in the NBA Development League and was used in activities during NBA All-Star 2006 in Houston. NBA retired players Steve Kerr and Mark Jackson participated in testing the new ball as well.
In case you're wondering, this is only the second time in 60 seasons that the ball is being changed. In 1970, the ball was transitioned from a four panel to an eight panel ball. Spalding has had been the official supplier since 1983.

i have no idea. I guess they just wanted to make it harder to score and help out the defense. Maybe it's to slow up the dribbling skills but that won't work. If you get the answer please let know.
