Actually, the way it works is that Physics will help an engineer, but I'm not sure if engineering will help a physicist.....
It is always good for an engineer, especially electrical engineer to know Physics because most of the work involves Physics, and it will help the engineer know the theory behind the work in addition to knowing how to apply it. Engineers that might not want to study Physics will still know how to apply the laws to everyday life, but won't know the theory behind it.

If you want to be an applied physicist, then studying engineering might help you, if you want to be a theoretical or experimental physicist, I don't think engineering will be of any use to you.

Since you want to go into theoretical rather than experimental physics, stick with the curriculum from the physics department.
