I had one of two theorys. Either the air bags have already been deployed once or they are located differently than traditonal air bags.

Airbags have actually been around for 2 generations. Vehicles have changed in the sense that airbags are now STANDARD, hence your 2nd "generation" airbag. They have also been upgraded thanks to research of past accidents where the srs system comes into play. :)

The software to read air bag codes is not the same as OBDII . What this means is that the air bag is not working or won't work . Now this happens all the time, many cars do not even have airbags, I wouldn't worry about it.

they have sensors that know how hard the impact is. on a soft crash, they open slowly, in a hard chash they open faster. an airbag can open with enough force to break your nose. but its still better than slamming your face into the sterring wheel. keep your seat as far away from the wheel as you can.

i'm pretty sure it means that it is a newer version of the original airbag. kindof like windows 2000 versus windows 95. same general thing... but much better.

They're not used. It has new technology, relating to intensity of crash, etc.
