I had an injury from grappling years ago. Went to hsptl but they couldn't find anything. Knees always hurt after that but not to the point I couldn't participate in sports. This last summer I fell off of a platform about 7 feet high and landed on my knee caps. I got medical treatment but all they told me was that I had tight quads and to go to physical therapy. I did for 3mos and nothing helped. They tried to balance my hips out but couldn't. Finally I had x-rays and still orthopedic dr. couldn't find anything, said i need an MRI but costs like 2K! (I am a student). My knee really hurts now all the time- especially when sitting with leg bent even a little. Pain is under knee cap at center in middle. It hurts to walk, (almost limping) & feels like my knee is going to give or lock when I'm going down stairs. I have to keep leg straight 2 avoid pain. No swelling at anytime. I feel I will not be able to be active again , knee just hurts too bad. What can i do? Thank you 4 helping me!

It sounds like your meniscus. That is the tissue in your knee. It would not show a tear in a regular x-ray because an x-ray only shows bones. They need to do an MRI to see the soft tissue and prove it is torn. There is really nothing else you can do. ou can take pain pills but the tear most likely will not heal if you are in pain like you are. Typical of this type of injury is no swelling.

you may be able to go to a local county hospital that may not charge for the procedure.

A couple people hit on something. What you may be experiencing is called chondromalacia. It is a painful breakdown of the cartilage behind the kneecap, normally from age and overuse. In your case it has occurred from trauma. There could be other problems, but if the orthopod gave you an all clear, you need to try something else. The best place to go for this is a physical therapy clinic that employs sports medicine persons, especially athletic trainers, they can help more than a doctor. That brings me to your other problem.
If you are a student, your school should be providing some kind of medical care for you that is paid for with tuition and tax dollars. Take advantage of it, and use these resources. If it is a small community school, you should still be able to get some help, obviously students can't pay for it themselves. Talk to a student assistance person. You need to find help soon!

I don't know if this will help because my husband has been diagnosed with this problem and he's young, so it's not likely something that's hard to find.

My husband has a cartilage defect in his knees. They cause him constant pain, sometimes excruciating, in many of the situations you've described. He gets SOME relief when he weighs less (he's 260lbs). Allopathic physicians say the only treatment is surgery to replace the faulty cartilage, but they don't recommend it till later in life because the replacements tend to be needed every seven years thereafter.

Holistic health care gets at the root cause of the problem and assists your body's ability to heal itself.

My husband has some deep-seated emotional issues and doesn't love himself enough to take any course of therapy, so I can't really tell you whether anything works. I can, however, tell you a little more about one possible course of treatment if you contact me. Hopefully this information will help you.

I had a torn cartilage in my knee from being run over by a car. I went on Dr,. Richard Schulze's incurable program and it fixed my knee for 12 years although now starting to hurt again so I need to go back on it. If you are short on money, buy bulk herbs and make the formulas yourself..go online and see how easy it is to make tinctures. All his formulas use one part of each herb except a few use 2 parts but using one part will still probably help. Only the intestinal cleanse #2 had more --it had 7 parts pysllium so do add more like it says. Be sure to do the alternating hot/cold showers he recommends. I'll get the link for herbdoc.com (go to curezone and type schulze and patient handbook in case I forget to get the link.

Also helpful (but may be more for arthritis than injuries are glusosamine sulfate and chrongrotin sulfate, good calcium/mag supplement with yucca at least 4 or 5 caps a day,. I also just read that drinking a tbs of RAW vinegar (get at health food store or heatlh section of supermarkets (Braggs or spectrum are the brands)--check that it has the "mother in it).
also add one tbs of raw honey and water and drink 3 times a day. This has greatly helped people with pain and arthritis (you likely are getting arthritis there). Some have miracles (but it comes back if stopped)..Add one drop of Lugel's solution of iodine two times a week, It may also be inflamed use tumeric.

Al;so recommend magnets, 10,000 guass. I'll get the link. There really help me and 90% of the people (use waterproof first aid tape to stick on instead of the tape that omes with it or you mght lose them).
http://www.myvitanet.com/magneodmagsu.html on sale for $14 used to be 20
Also hyaluronic acid has had great effect with knee problems. I'll be back.

I have had great success with alternative health and am happy I never got arthroscopic surgery. I also had great success with chiropractic when dotors said I needed immediate surgery for a severely hernated disc..itt is usually cheaper than doctors..tell them you just want the cheapest route..just an adjustment and not the heast packs and electric stim..maybe they will do that..mine did.

Finally the poster that suggested the church had a great idea..they often help people..they helped me several times.

Could be torn cartilage. I torn mine and the MRI did not show much of a tear but when I had surgery they found it was torn 80%. They just had to remove 80% of it. I was getting a locking sensation and could not fully bend my knee. Mine was the cartilage behind the knee cap toward the outer part of the knee.

You obviously need good medical attention. Go to a large church or synagogue of your faith tradition and speak with the priest there. Tell him/her that you are desperate and need help. Get some support to advocate for you in finding an answer. You are trying to get noticed by the medical system; get some others to start helping you. This sounds serious.

Here's a thought, how about going and purchasing a health insurance policy, this way you wont have to worry about the cost and neither will the tax payers.
