Good question is weather you want a photo or a hunting safari because that will make a difference in where you will decide to go. If its a hunting safari then there's also the question of what you're planning to hunt and that will determine which country, which will also determine routing, based on the type of weapon you're planning to use.

If its a photo safari then it will depend on what animals you'd like to see and in what type of a camp you'd like to stay. You also don't need to limit yourself to only one particular country and it is possible (and affordable) to do several different countries on a safari.

Another consideration is the comfort level you prefer on your safari. People who have never been assume you pitch a tent each night depending on where you are. Those are available, but there are "permanent tent" camps, luxury camps, etc. that are available, which provide you the safari experience, but still offer you some or all of the comforts of home - flush toilets, running water, showers, etc.

One more consideration is transportation. Do you want to do the safari by vehicle, horse, camel, etc?

I have done photo safaris in S. Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. I have also booked hunting safaris. If you'd like to discuss (no obligation) please email me at gsa_stlmo@yahoo.com.

Hope this helps. I loved Africa and enjoy talking about it.

i went on a Kenya safari in December 1994. I went with Somak tours. It was a week safari and then a week in either mombasa or Malindi , whichever you choose. kenya was fabulous. People very friendly. The safari was in several parks. the samburi national park, the aberdares mountains and the treetops hotel {great experience} lake Navaisha, Masai Mara park{excellent} . we had a day and a night in Nairobi too. don't go out alone there. it is best to go on safari as part of a group or package holiday - it makes it more fun and safer. I couldn't recommend it enough. Brilliant time. amazing experience. Have a ball.Remember to get tablets for malaria protection and get vaccinated against cholera, yellow fever, thyphoid, tetanus, hepatitis A, polio.

Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park
uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park
Cradle of Humankind
Mapungubwe
Robben Island
Cape Floral Kingdom
Vredefort Dome
Enjoy your trip. South Africa is becoming one of the most sought after vacation destinations.

I went to the Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Kruger. The crater is absolutely amazing, we saw a hyena kill, a pride of lions and a lake of flamingoes within ten minutes of getting into the crater. Very cold though! You can camp on the rim of the crater, it's INCREDIBLE. No giraffes there though. Apart from there, the Serengeti was probably the best.
