Raising the pitch of your voice is a sign of stress! It could be that they're stressed about making an impression! However, it could just be simple girly excitement!!

it's reflective of a cnahge in emotional state..it shows interest and pleasure for a woman's voice to rise in pitch

hmm i think the pitch will change when the number changes from 2 to more.and not from >2 to more...
there is more privacy between 2 persons and the tone is soft and low...

We talk to dogs and babies in a higher voice, too. I think it's an unconscious way of appearing non-threatening.

Another thing is when we talk to hubby maybe have an argument about something i find my voice rises as well, hate it , dont want to sound like a fishwife.
