Yes they do! Men's buttons are on the right side of the shirt front, women's buttons are on the left side of the shirt front. The reason for this is that for a long time a woman's clothing was so hard to get into that she would have someone help her - her sister, or her daughter or one of her maids! (or maybe her husband...) Having the women's buttons on the left made it easier for a right-handed person to button her up. Poor men. They had to dress themselves!!

I always thought it came about from military dress.
Soldiers wore their swords on the left side (obviously most people are right handed). So the garments were buttoned so that when the sword was drawn the man's sleeve wouldn't get caught on the cloth.
Hope that makes sense! As I said that's how I thought the buttoning of men's clothes came about.

It goes back to the days when men had valets, man-servants, who dressed them and they didn't do up their own buttons. So the buttons are positioned so it is easier to be done up by someone other than the garment-wearer, who was standing in front. At that time, women wore dresses which were fastened at the back and years later (probably early 20th century, when women started to go out to work), when blouses were made for women to fasten themselves, the buttons were positioned so it was easy for the wearer to do it.

in the old days when women had maid to help them dress, it is easier to button when the buttons are on the right. I guess men buttoned their own clothes.

For a very simple reason.... according to the "etiquette" a man should always hold a woman by her Right arm. Being buttoned the way they are this way while looking or talking at the woman the man cant " see anything" !!!!
