if you press alt escape it will switch between windows that you have open, good for lazy people, or if you lose your mouse

Depends on the program you use... It's main functionality is for canceling actions, hide windows, terminate the application. This is the "intuitive" behavior... Nevertheless you can write your own application which by pressing escape will begin playing a movie or to open a website... this is senseless but it can be easly done... And ofcourse some applications can "trap" the "press" action of this key and "ignore" it's behaviour also.

Yes, its used for all sorts of things, mainly to escape out of programs. If you hit cntrl and escape the start menu pops up.
