Try the fried rice, yes it may sound dumb but the moment u try the fried rice u'll know if the rest of the suff on the menu is nice becuz fried rice is the most basic food if the chef can't get it right and be prepared! Chinese is very standard when it comes to eating, 3 dishes and a soup. Of the 3 dish there wld be meat, veg and fish. the soup helps to complete the meal. For meat i wld recommend black pepper beef or sweet and sour pork, fish wld be steamed fish of any kind, veg juz go for the simple oyster sauce stir fry veg. Soup u can try winter melon soup(if they have it).

Part of my usual order (which I share with others):
Singapore rice noodles -quite hot, & will contain a variety of meat/fish unless u r more specific
Chicken Chinese style -Chicken breasts (cooked til they're quite dry) served on a bed of soft (not crunchy) beansprouts, covered in a chinese barbeque sauce (nothing like a traditional American bbq sauce; this 1 is red & syrupy. Quite tasty)
Crispy Chilli Chicken/ Beef. This is DELICIOUS. I hope that the fact that u cannot taste the meat atall does not put u off. It is very thin shreds of meat, in a spicy batter, deep fried until chewy & very crisp, & glazed in a sticky, spicy chilli sauce. With a couple of shreds of carrot & fresh chilli 2 garnish. It has a similar texture 2 pork crackling.
Make sure that, should u opt 4 curry or somethng saucy (I always side order a curry sauce & a sweet & sour sauce), u have a rice/noodle dish 2 soak up any juices, & also bulk up ur meal.
Crispy Duck is generally a good order in a chinese, especially if there r a few of u & u can make ur pancakes 2gether. (pancake like a tortilla pancake: not an easter 1)
Salt & pepper ribs r good also, if ur order is swamped with chicken.
Safer things r chicken chow mein, chicken balls, etc
Some people really love the soups 2. I love spring rolls as a starter, with a sweet chilli dipping sauce.

Get something you like that IS what it SAYS - lol

Beef with Broccoli

Beef with Green Pepper

Roast Pork with Snow Peas

Shrimp with Mixed Vegetables (Chinese mixed vegetables are generally broccoli, zigzag cut flat slices of carrot, water chestnuts, snow peas and sometimes mushrooms)

Shrimp with Broccoli

Chicken with Mixed Vegetables

All dishes come with white rice, some restaurants do plain fried rice.

Keep it simple for your first order because everyone's got different tastes... then look at what others order and ask if you can taste one bite. It'll give you a better idea for next time. We usually have everyone choose one dish but then we share them all so everyone gets to try new things.

It's generally pretty simple. There's a brown sauce, a white sauce and items that are hot and spicy are designated on the menu (typically it will say "Hot" or "Szechuan Style" or "Hunan" or "Kung Pao" - this last one has peanuts so be careful if you're allergic!) There's also "sweet 'n sour" which means the meat has been dipped in a light batter, deep fried in oil, then it's topped with an orange colored sauce that's thick and mostly sweet with a little tartness to it... generally there are onions, green peppers and pineapple chunks mixed in as well.

Lo Mein is a soft noodle (similar to spaghetti) mixed with a little meat, a little vegetables, whatever you ask for, little brown sauce, very easy if you're into noodles

Fried rice is just that... it's white rice that's tossed in a skillet with bits of meat and vegetables and some soy sauce and seasonings and stir-fried until it's brown and tasty...

Enjoy :)

It's my favourite, the great thing is that it isn't too spicy so you can taste the natural ingredients. Stick to chicken or beef dishes, I say stay away form the curries, they are not that great. If you like seafood then you are in the right place, try the prawn, but out of shells because there is nothing worse than looking into the eye of the animal you are about to eat. Duck in orange sauce is great, better than crispy duck, chicken and sweet corn soup is amazing too. Noodles are great and I never eat the rice! Otherwise, enjoy!

It's not so much chinese food it's just a way of cooking chinese people would'nt dream of eating half the stuff you get in chinese restaurants in Europe but heres what I like

Sesame Prawn Toast with dipping honey

and a bowl of hot lemon water to wash your hands after

Seet and sour chicken or prawn Hong kong style

This means there is a chewy batter coating the chicken YUM

Fried Rice (of course)

Sorbet

to finish

Enjoy

Ask the waiter if they do a Sample menu (lots of different things to try), or ask for their recommendations. If you have a choice, some restaurants have a buffet evening where you can choose from at least 50 dishes. The Water Margin in Portsmouth is good (no fancy decor but good value food), ..try searching the internet for one in your area. Happy Eating!

You should start off slow so here is what I recommend. Beef and Broccoli (just beef broccoli and a sauce that isn't too strong), or you can try chicken and broccoli, shrimp fried rice (umm), Chicken Chow Mein (just noodles with veggies and meat), umm what else Black Bean Chicken and Green Beans is pretty good too. Good luck. Happy eating!

Sweet & Sour Chicken & Fried Rice. If you are unsure you will like the sauce ask for it on the side to sample first!

Don't forget to ask for a fortune cookie!

Another good item is crab ragoon, which is crabmeant and cream cheese that is deep fried in a pastry!

go for the basics
Starter - Spring rolls or Prawn toast
Main-
Sweet and Sour Chicken or
Aromatic Crispy Duck or
Chow Mein or
Chicken in black-bean sauce.
and Egg Fried rice for a side dish
I suggest you advise your friends to stick their meals in the middle and just everyone share, most people go for this and you get to try lots of different meals.
