Compaq is quite good. The ideal one would be an Intel Celeron though-great comp!

Macintosh. Dell, HP, and others usually run Windows, which means they can't be reliable since Windows is extremely insecure.
Get a Mac. You'll be surprised at how much more reliable they are. They're easier to use, maintain, and upgrade too.

By the way, there are no more new Powermacs. They've been replaced by the Mac Pro, which has 4 extremely fast Intel Xeon processors. All new Macs use Intel processors and Powermacs use the PowerPC processor.
Macs are compatible with ALL software. Well, at least all OS X, Windows, and Linux software. They're the only computers that can run all three.

It depends on what you need it for. Macs still aren't compatible with all software.
Micron is a workhorse for heavy applications. Check them out at mpc.com. Cost is comparable to dell. They're the best I've ever used and I've used nearly everybody.

Apple had always worked great for me. When my friends were dealing with viruses or broken hardware, my mac was--and still is--working fine.
Macs are almost virus proof, by the way.
They are extremely easy to use once you play with them for awhile.
Good luck!
