Go and have a complete physical first at your doctor's office. Mention to him you want to get into some sort of exercise program or even a little dieting. He can determine what is safe for you at this stage of the game and what is not safe.

You might want to start a walking program -- maybe even with your wife or perhaps a buddy. You might want to join a gym or go swimming regularly. It's up to you -- what you like to do or what you used to like to do. Make it fun and not a chore.

Hi c I'm no expert either but I am trying to get healthier after a long stay away from physical activity and I walk waist deep in a local swimming center for a Half hour every second day just a stroll the water takes away a fair percentage of the impact while adding resistance to the walk , I drag my palms along in the water at the same time and after about 15 minutes I can really feel the weight of the resistance taking hold , the good thing is that if you get board as I some times do I listen to my kids ipod . I know its an embarrassment to just walk up and down in a pool with all those fish swimming laps but i look at as its easier now than it will be 5 years from now so I go for it and its helping .

Start walking first. A mile or so a day, then after a week or so, build it up more each week until you are averaging about 5 miles a day. Walking is the best overall exercise for good health, circulates the blood, builds up your largest muscles--the leg and butt muscles, which in turn speeds up your metabolism. Forget the gym or a weight machine right now, get your overall body back in shape first with the walking.

Im not an expert but I am taking Anatomy and Phisiology in college right now and my professor told us that the best thing to do is walk. You will feel so much better, and your cardiovascular system will greatly benefit from it. He does not recommend intense activities like running after you are around 20 because your cartilage will become damaged in your knees, and after that age it will not replace itself.
