As thomas points out the wise men brought presents to Jesus, however they didn't get there on time for Christmas day! Moreso the new year! in Scotland it used to be that you exchanged gifts for the new year! The idea of |christmas, as in the tree, decorations etc. Is actually a pagan celebration but, and fortunately for us (I love Christmas) the chuch went along with it really! indeed most churches have a Christmas tree! So and although i couldn't tell you who's resposnible for it ... I think it's a lovely tradition!

It's due in part to the christ myth and that he was brought gifts upon his birth...combine that with the stories of (the Dutch version of) St.Nicholas who was known to give gifts on the eve of a feast day in early Dec (there are other similar stories/myths re: a santa claus type figure), and other traditions of that time of year ... over time Xmas emerged as a gift-giving secular holiday and not just a religious one for xians...

I do believe it originated when the 3 wise men brought gifts to baby Jesus. And we do it to show our love and appreciation to those we care about. (well, that's my personal reason anyway)

in remembrance of the wise men who presented gifts after Jesus was born....and most of all, to remember and honor the gift that the Heavenly Father gave us; His Son, Jesus Christ. He gave us that which was most precious to Him, so that we have a way to be forgiven, and have a direct relationship with Him.

I believe because the wise men brought gifts to Jesus. This is why we celebrate Christmas... after Jesus, the Christ.

I tell my kids that Jesus allows us to receive gifts for His birthday, so we can continue to let His light shine. It's like His gift to us.

well they got the giftgiving down it seems.
But like they said, the 25th of December, was oringally a pagan holiday, much of which was in England at the time.
Then the church came to England *if i remember right * and said.."hey, we have a holiday that is on the same day as yours, why not convert to christianity?"
So the church adding something small to achieve the ideal of "saving" everyone it could..
and to whoever said they wise men brought gits moreso on the new year..youre still abit off..
Try summer/springtime..
