My lap top has been running very slow recently. It takes ages to start up and all the programmes are very running slow. I have scanned for viruses and all seems to be ok.

Does anyone knows what could be causing the problem and any suggestions on how to fix it?

Could be a fan died. That will automatically
slow the CPU so the computer does not
overheat. Happens all the time.

If you have had your lap top for a while there are a couple of possibilities:

Too much stuff on your hard drive-delete all old programs. Resist the urge to have every program you have ever used on your pc if you haven't used it in 1-3 months get rid of it.

Delete all unused files-Save files to CD if you think you may need them again

Empty your Internet browsers temporary folder and delete cookies. Set the cookies to auto update so that you only have one file for each site not 20 for every new update. Change the history time to 2-3 days top not the standard 10 days that is the default

go to the website for your pc and look to see what other users have done to resolve their problems

Delete duplicate programs-in spite of what the sites might want you to believe get rid of them. One version of everything. IF you find that any program downloaded from the Internet doesn't work after you do this delete all copies of it and download a fresh updated version

Deplete similar programs
You don't need windows media player, Real Player, Quick Time etc. Keep the program that you like the best and delete the others

I hope this helps

Download and run the free adware removing software called Ad-Aware SE Personal by Lavasoft. I promise you your computer will run much faster! I just helped my neighbor with the same problem. She never turned her computer off because it took so long to restart. Here is the link for the download: http://lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

Check your startup folder, you may have things running that you don't need, these will slow down startup and also lead to slow response times.

Also check your tack manager to see whats running, and what's using the resources.

You may find you have one or two programs that are using the majority of your resources.
