I believe she did exist.
But I don't believe there was just one, I believe that in that one place, a family of Pleiosaurs managed to survive to modern day.
But I think they have been killed off now by exploitation and too much investigation. Which is sad. The one chance humans may have had to have real contact with pre-history and we manage to ruin it.
