Snakes can see, but it's not their primary way of looking at their world. They're totally blind during shedding until the eye-caps come off with the rest of the shed which is when you'll see them NOT eating...because they can't see their prey.
They depend a great deal on their sense of smell using a specialized tongue to bring in molecules from the air that runs across what's called the Jacobson's organ. The Jacobson's organ then processes the data and tells the snake what it needs to know about the surrounding area. While hunting, they also depend on the heat sensors on the sides of it's upper jaw line and the vibrations that come through the ground. These "pits" are extremely sensitive and the combination of the tongue clicking, heat sensing and feeling vibrations makes them deadly accurate...:-)
I have a pretty good picture at home of the Jacobson's organ on my iguana, but I can't access it here from work...:-(

Yes, snakes can see. Their vision isn't as appalling as people will have you believe, one of my snakes can see me when we're at opposite ends of the room. He reacts to my movements.
Snakes are not totally blind during a shed. They have reduced vision during the 'blue' phase, and not all snakes refuse food during a shed. Some eat, some don't.
Boids (pythons and boas) have heat pits. They consist of a row of grooves along the upper lips. Not all snakes have these pits, so don't say they are essential to the snake because they are not.
By the way, snakes aren't deaf. They lack ears, but there is a bone inside the head which detects sound.

Snakes do have eyes. yes they can see, but some snakes also have a sort of heat-sensor in a little pit or something that i think is near their nose.

Actually snakes can hear, see, smell, and sense heat. They see with their eyes (although poorly). Hear and smell with their tongues (exceptionally well). And they sense/see heat with their heat pits located along their upper lip. An interesting note scientists now believe these pits function similar to our eyes in that the snakes actually see like us looking through night vision goggles.

If your asking if snakes have eyesight, yes but it is not very good and they normally use it after the smelling and heat sensing. They have very bad eye sight after they loose their skin, but it comes back after a while. When working in the dark, they normally use their tongue and nose for heat tracking and smell for locating their pray.

No they actually can't. When they flicker their tongue out, that's their way of seeing. They have to taste the air to locate and object such as prey.
