ok I am gonna try to answer the best simplest way i can... The republicans are more or less considered to be the religious rich of our country now when i say religious of course i am almost certainly referring to Christianity they are against anything that goes against the bible for example abortion and homosexual marriage...the democrats on the other hand tend to be for the poor or so they say they want everyone in our country to have affordable medical care..most democrats are against our war in Iraq and our policies in several places around the world the democrats are considered to be what we call liberal they believe the opposite of the republicans( remember i said they were pretty much into the bible, well most of them i guess) the democrats believe in the right to abortion and most of them are OK with the homosexual marriage thing

The most basic difference is that Democrats are for a stronger centeral government. They prefer federal control. Republicans prefer a smaller federal government with more control on the state level.
Though this should be clear, it seams BOTH parties tend to "adjust" their beliefs depending on the issue. Seams now the parties are defined based on the issues at hand.

Conservatives (Republicans), Progressives (Democrats).
Republicans represent the odd alliance between the rich and the fearful middle to lower class white folks. The Dems pick up the intellectuals, liberal rich people, and people of color.

Republicans are more conservative and let religion base a lot of their policies and support big business and the rich man.

Democrats are more liberal and usually don't let religion base policies and are for the middle class and working poor and believe the government should provide health care to the people.
