The decision is the first Supreme Court decision to use the concept of judicial review - that the Court may find a law violates the Constitution and thus is unenforcable. Specifically, the Judiciary Act of 1789 attempted to modify Article III of the Constitution, which sets the jurisidiction for the Supreme Court. The Constitution must be supreme to normal congressional acts, else "To what purpose are powers limited, and to what purpose is that limitation committed to writing, if these limits may, at any time, be passed by those intended to be restrained?"
