This is somewhat of a trick question that got most of the other people. As of this year and the past few, it's offense. The NBA has made dozens of rule changes that affect how a defender can guard a player. The changes that were made to blocking fouls, zone defenses, and in paint defenses all promote an uptempo game that favors the offense. The reason that these changes happened was because of people's complaints that the game was moving too slow and it was boring.

If you want an example take a look at the Finals from last year. The Mavericks had an amazing defense that shut down the entire Heat except for a single player that was unstoppable. Look at Detroit, always known as one of the best defenders in the league also fell to Wade and his Heat.

There has been a debate about this for many years. I think you definitely need a strong defense to win a title, but if you can't score, than it would be hard to win, regardless of the defense. I'm more partial towards offense because it can wear down a defense. The Suns are a perfect example. If you have a good floor leader at the point and a good up-tempo game, it keeps the defense off-balance and once a defensive team gets behind, they have trouble making up the scoring slack. So, for me, it would be a very, very slight edge to the offense.

Defense

Because the objective of the game is to have more points on the scoreboard than your opponent at the end of the game, scoring is a necessity. A very important statistic to consider in answering this question is that, in a walloping 100% of all NBA games, the team with the highest number of points at the final buzzer is declared the winner.

So my answer is DEFENSE. You can't let the other team score more points than your team or you'll LOSE! So DEFENSE is my choice, followed closely by offense.

Defense is still critical but with the rule changes favouring offensive play the balance is changing. You cannot have a really good defensive team anymore win a championship without some offensive flair.

In the NBA, offense is DEFINITELY more important than defense. No one is coming to watch Kobe or Shaq play defense - the fans want to see Kobe "light it up" from outside or Shaq "bury" a dunk or ten. You can't put people in the seats with scores 52 - 49 but you cant 't keep them away from a game with the score of 152 - 149.

Base this argument off of the past year's performances. Detroit was one of the best teams in the league for the last 5 years because of their defense! Dallas had the best offense in the league, but could not win against that Detroit Defense.

In the NBA, it is all about getting stops on defense. This becomes even more important when you reach the playoffs, as more games come down to the final minutes. It is imperative that you stop the other team in those closing minutes.
