If light travels through it without the material itself being illuminated, it's transparent (like glass on a clear light bulb, small quantities of clear water, magnifying glass, fish bowl, reading glasses)

If light travels through it, but illuminates the material itelf more than it projects through it, the material is Transluscent:
Glass on a frosted, or painted light bulb, tinted glass, a sheet of thin notebook paper, plastic lens light diffusers. human skin (shine a bright light against the tip of your finger)

If Light is completely stopped/reflected by it, it is opaque: A baseball, most rocks, a mirror, ceramic mug.

Opaque - visible light does not go through....
book, soda can, rock, calculator, YOU.
Transparent - Clear, light goes through without being dispersed...
Drinking glass, prism, window pane, water droplet, eyeglasses
Translucent - light goes through but is dispersed...
frosted glass, milk, egg yolk, tissue paper, bubble bath foam.

Opaque, as in "can't see through":
Brick, wood, cardboard, wool, leaf.

Transparent, as in "can see through":
glass (clear), shallow water, clear plastics, air, polished crystals.

Translucent, as in "can barely see through":
Paper, stained glass, polarised windows, unpolished crystals... and... um... can't think of another.
