Democrats and Republicans have separate, antagonist ugly utopias.

Democrats believe in two things to bring about utopia. 1) They believe man is perfectable through his institutions; for example, spend enough on public schools and all children will be good citzizens at graduation. 2) They believe in using government to create and enforce classes of citizenship.

Republicans believe that government can be used to create aChristian utopia (by banning liquor in the 1920's, banning drugs 1950's to present, outlawing abortion, bringing back school prayer, forcing a war in the middle east --requiring Christ to return to earth and govern the planet).

Both these visions of utopia fail and lead to dictatorship, but the institutions through which mankind is perfectable are so shockingly expensive that Democrats always wind up raising taxes (but "only on the rich" -- a rickety ruse that few believe any more) and Republicans have gotten into the hideous habit of barging into very expensive, unending wars.

Those of us who regard all utopias as ugly are of necessity independent voters and citizens.

Yes Democrats actually do lower taxes, on the lower income people in our country ( Those making less then 100K a year) Where Republicans actually raise taxes on those making less then 100K a year. I'm an accountant and I can tell you, the republicans have not lowered taxes for any of my clients, not a one.

There are many differences. One of which is that Republicans tend to be strongly influenced by their conservative Christian beliefs, and so often take a moral instead of practical view on a variety of issues, such as, gay marriage, and stem cell research, to name but two.
There is supposed to be a separation of church and state, but the Bush administration has been pretty open about the role Christianity plays in its politics.
