They all vary somewhat, but read the manual and follow it. Most say to charge for 1 hour and overnight occasionally. Generally, don't use them until they run down; charge before they start to but follow the recommendation of the manual. I'm assuming this isn't the new Lithium battery???

I try to discharge the power in all my rechargeable battery tools, I'll sometimes put a rubber band around the trigger to drain it right down to empty, so they will always take a full charge & last longer to drain down again. Most need @ lest a good 4 hours to charge back up to a full charge, but some chargers have quick charge & can boost the batttery in 20 min.'s.

These battery chargers have usually a small light (LED), which either .....
- changes from red to green, or
- red light goes out, or
- green light turn on
(depending on model)
.....once the battery is fully charged.
I'm certain yours has one of those.
