Perhaps a long long time ago - but even in the dark ages some trade was necessary. geographically, industrialised countries will never have all the raw materials they require within their borders.

N. Korea aren't disconnected from the whole world, China do a great deal of business with them, as do a great many other countries (limited by sanctions on weaponry etc).

With economies increasingly becoming knowledge and skills based, rather than traditional commodities, borders become an increasingly irrelevant concept anyway. After all, you may well be asking this question from a different continent to me, and that's considered completely normal, right?

North and South Korea are perfect examples of why we need other countries to exist. Fifty years ago N. Korea was the front runner of technology there. Now S. Korea is one of the major technical societies in the world.
N. Korea has alienated itself from everyone except China. China only puts up with them to prevent N.K. government from completely collapsing and having to put up with millions of refugees crossing their borders.
