I used to play hockey with this old guy... like pushing 60, who was round as a barrel and skated like a Sunday driver.

He was the *hands down* best stickhandler I've ever met. I watched him literally walk the puck past eighteen year olds who thought they had him, and then doubled back to catch him, thought they had him again, and then

BLAM

- he'd cut loose with this wicked slap shot and the puck was past the goalie and in the net.

I ran into this guy once. I'm short, but solid for a girl. I ran into him full tilt, coming around the back of the net with my fool head down, like an idiot.

It was like Armageddon. He stayed perfectly upright, didn't budge.

I hit him, bounced off, flew back about ten feet, hit the boards and lay there for ten minutes before I could get up again.

Personally, I want my goaltenders quick and lithe. Gear makes big, not goalie.

If you're skating out, big and slow doesn't necessarily mean anything. Just ask Bryan Marchment.

That's an old bromide from years ago. I was a skinny whip when I was playing goalie in the 70's and it's true that size doesn't matter. On the occasions when I was on a team that had a better goalie, I would gladly give up the pads to play defense. It was while playing "D" that I came to the conclusion that although big guys tend to be seen as slow, they are like trying to push a cement truck when they set up in front of your goalie. If you want to play a certain position, then play it. What good will your physical size be if you are forced into something that you aren't happy doing? Besides, it's a team sport and the teams that stick together and make the most of each individual will succeed. Have fun.

well, the Mighty Ducks Movies would have you think so but being a goalie myself i find if im just a little out of shape things dont work that well so i could only imagine how hard it would be to play goal if i was an overweight guy. But it depends on the level your playing to. If no one can shot up high and they all ankle burn than a bigger goalie might be very hard to score on. It also depends on if you care or not. If it's just for fun, give it a try.

Ironically, all the goalies I have seen play were tall, skinny and lankie. My hubby told me that they sweat the most! Play goalie if you want to lose weight.....but don't go there if you think that is where a heavier guy should go because of the weight. Play D.

NO ! . playing the position of goalie these days is all about speed , the faster goalies are better . you don't have to have that fats of reflexs you just have to move side to side and up and down fast . me myself being a goalie i know that speed is key to being sucessful.

I don't think so. You have to pretty nimble and flexible to play goalie. I suppose being big means you will take up more space in the goal, but you still need to be able to move.

No. Folks will tell you that you should. But Hockey is a contact sport. Your weight can be an advantage. Slammin' the smaller players around.
If you have a good coach that can design plays to your strengths. Use the gifts you have to your teams' advantage. I've always been the heavest player on my team, but in crunch time my teammates know where to find me. I am not the prototype point guard but no girl on the court had handles like me. So damn that weight S@#%, your a player, so play.

no only people who aren't scared of getting hit with the puck should be goalies size doesn't matter only flexibility and the drive to improve your game matter if your a slow skater work on improving it a goalie has to be a good skater too good luck

first off, think about it, the goalie is the only one on the ice for the full 60mins of a game, secondly s/he has to be able to skate fast to get to the bench( delay penalty or when coach tells you to get off ice) yes it's true you can be a bigger player, but you can't be slow, but then if you practice and exercise you won't be slow-good luck!!!

no look at any NHL goalie they are all thin and usually aren't even that tall compared to skaters. you need good reflexes to be a goalie not size.
