if u click on start - control panel, and double click on sound and audio devices, on the window there will be a little tick at the bottom saying show volume control (or something of that sort) make sure that's ticked, and it should pop back on

ok there must be a hardware conflict
the fact that there is no sound and not simply about there being no icon on the task bar notification area

go to control panel
go to system, click hardware tab
go to device manager

once there check for any device with ? next to them

you can try uninstalling the keyboard driver or the sound driver
and then on the device manager window
select action on the menu and then click scan for hardware changes for windows to detect and install the drivers for newly discovered hardware automatically.

also to help you with the troubleshooting
go to control panel>>administrative tools>>event viewer
try to find if there are any error relatin g to your problems there
and then post back here

or you could simply try searching for a new updated drivers for your soundcard or integrated sound component and install the update. likewise look for an updated driver for your keyboard if it is available

Plug your speakers back in. You most likely unplugged them either pulling the system out to get to the back of it, or did not notice for some other reason that you unplugged them. That would be the KISS answer.
You might also have some sort of confict with the keyboard, but I cannot imagine how in the world that would happen.
