Since I graduated a few years ago, I've been working in what I thought was exactly the career I wanted. I thought it was going to be such a great life, living in London and working in a glamorous office... But it's not what I thought it would be and I am totally bored.

And a lot of other people I know have been disappointed with the world of work. Are we all in the wrong jobs, even though it's what we always wanted? Or should we just face up the fact that work is boring and we may as well get used to it?

I dunno, I'm in the same position. Went to uni and worked very hard to get where I am, really thought it was what I wanted, but now I'm just BORED. I keep thinking of changing careers to do something that stimulates me more, but I know people who've done it and they haven't ended up feeling any more positive or ended up in a better position after all. Maybe it's true that work is just a boring necessity for most people, and all this crap we're taught about aspiration and personal development is utter rubbish - eeeeeek! I might just sod it off and work part-time, spend more of my life doing things I like and let the job carry the bills........

Heeey Princess....you are young you have a bright future in front of you, cheer up,you can have many careers. If you don't like your present work you can try other things that interest you. The general rule I have heard over the years is to find the thing you enjoy doing most and make that your career or job. Even the most interesting work has some boring time. Also the highest paying work is not always the most rewarding........as the song says "The best things in life are free"

the 1st thing u have to ask yourself is "what do i want? what makes me happy?" Too many people r not happy at work because they have no goals in life. Just collecting money is pointless if you r not happy. Think of what u would do if u didn't have to go to that place u call work, like when u was a child. i personally value my own time and energy, that's why i am moving towards a career that will allow me to carry out the things I've always wanted to do but didn't have the funds to do it.

Great question. I find in my work (which I adore) that I speak to sooooooo many people who are totally disillusioned with the "career thing" but can't (or won't) see any way out. For myself, I was in that trap until a health scare forced me change my work situation. My husband had to give up his job to care for me & our daughter. Although it was an initial shock to go from a very healthy joint income to our current situation (we earn less than 25% of what we did 7 years ago) we are so rich in other areas of our lives. Money truely isn't everything & if you don't overstretch yourself in the first instant, you can cut your cloth to fit. We don't have much money, but we don't want for anything. We both have time to spend with our child, we have each other & we're not working the 24/7 culture - although we both do work self employed.

What a good question. I'd never thought of it like that. Thats exactly what I want to do, go to London and get a good job. I reckon that we are very delluisioned about the world of work, but it's probably just because we think we're gonna have really exciting jobs when they probablly don't exist. There's not much that you can do nowadays thats exciting really. So I think we've just gotta accept our boring, mudain lives.

Party on. :-(

Sort of question i carry around with me every day... I'm also disillusioned by the whole career 'thing'... I think career paths are an attempt to pigeon-hole yourself according to your supposedly natural talents and prove a pointless point to yourself and your peers... its just a petit-beourgeouis thing... God i feel cynical today :0(

We all make mistakes in life but we learn from them. If this career business isn't for you find something that is.

You should not have to face up to the fact that you will be bored for the rest of your life, as life is too precious to waste it being bored.

when i was 20 i went from a job paid at £3.30 per hour to one at £8 per hour - the second was the most boring job i've ever had in a ten year career!
it certainly showed me that job satisfaction is much more important than having a few extra quid!

Face up to it honey. Very very few people actually enjoy their jobs. They are a means to an end.

I am in fact dissillusioned with the whole 'grown up' thing as well! Lol.
