The green power light glows when using the adaptor but pressing the on switch does nothing. I have reinserted the battery and pressed the reset switch but no joy. I have bought a new BIOS battery and will try that but what else could be the problem? It was starting to act up and not shut down unless you pulled the battery. Could the system board be to blame and the best bet be buy a new laptop? Thanks

Try powering up without the battery fitted if that is possible.
I had a similar problem with a Toshiba. The battery was so dead that it effected the power to the on switch.

i'm a laptop tech. I have 5 IBM laptops sitting the following (2 diverse technology fashions) and characteristic been utilizing an eMachines 60w adapter with a installation barrel tip to potential them up for reimaging. None of them have blown up. My suggestion is to verify the the finest option wattage and the end configuration by searching for the specs on the kind numbers. Many Acers take some diverse tips and wattages. some barrels tips do sit down free/tighter so as that installation is area of that interest in case you difficulty about the plug slipping off.

I've had so many battery problems with laptops that I'll never buy another. Laptop batteries get "lazy" because we leave the computer plugged in all the time. The battery never gets stressed to the point that it needs a full overnight charge. And, it seems the replacement batteries will not hold a charge any better.

With my Toshiba Sattelite I have to get the computer started and quickly yank the battery halfway out, and then it's running on the adapter. Reverse the procedure to get it to shut-down.

If you know someone with electronics experience, they can help you drain the battery all the way by putting a capacitor across the battery terminals. CAUTION doing so will make the capacitor red-hot, it should sit on a damp sponge.

The BIOS battery is just for the clock. CMOS remembers settings by itself. If you can get into Startup and no settings are changed, replacing the BIOS battery really isn't going to help.

Good luck.

The best would be to take it to a IBM dealer repair shop. Maybe you have to reinstall everything. Get some proffessional advice wouldn't hurt. Maybe you don't have to by a new one:-)
PS you shouldn't need to pull out a battery to close down a computer!
Look up at IBM's website and look for the closest dealer for you. i think they even have a phone number you can call.
