There is no harm to the baby from you coughing. Little babies are very well insulated and attached, and though you can be sick as a proverbial dog, they are quite content in their little warm spot. You do need to speak with the doctor before you take anything for your cough though, beyond the non-mediated cough drops. You can try honey and lemon in warm water, or sip it in tea, but that's about it. The problem with most of the cough preparations is either the medication they contain or the alcohol they are mixed in with. Neither is good for the baby, especially during this critical time of development. The doctor may have some recommendations, but he/she certainly needs to know. If the cough is due to a runny nose, you can sleep propped up in a chair or bed. If it's just from a cold and irritated throat, a humidifier or vaporizor to add moisture will help. Keep sipping liquids to keep the throat moist, and that helps keep down the irritation and desire to cough. Suck on whatever hard candies you like. Cool liquids soothe better than warm, but liquid is what's important, not the temperature. Try to avoid dairy and milk products, as they make the mucous feel thicker and increase your desire to cough them up. Fortunately, no matter how hard you cough, the baby is safe and has no idea that mum is having a rotten time of it. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.
