This is VERY common in industry.

Look up "Network Attached Storage" (NAS) in Yahoo or Google and you'll see how it works. Essentially you need to have a small processor and disk controller manage the network connection and disk access. But is it done.

Other ways to do it are to share the disks on computeres as a pee-to-peer network..Another way, but expensive is a storage area network (SAN)

yes, there's such a thing as NAS (network attached storage). Unfortunately that's as far as my knowledge goes. Google is your friend.
