"At Last" was performed by Etta James

Depends on the nature of the show. However, Randy Newman has certainly composed some "unique" clever songs. From "Political Science" in which he suggest we should "drop the big one and see what happens" to "A Wedding in Cherokee County" where he laments that his new wife, on their wedding night "laughed at my mighty sword.... she laughed at my mighty sword."

He has great sense of humor and writes from an interesting perspective.

Another one that comes to mind (if you're a female)-- there's an old jazz tune called "If I can't Sell It, I'll Sit On It" or something like that-- it was revived awhile back in the Broadway show "Black and Blue." Great song where a woman is making a sales pitch for an old chair.... but the double entendre is that she's talking about something a little more sexual.

One more-- this is more serious (again, it depends on the nature of the show). Billie Holiday had a wonderful, fairly obscure song called "Strange Fruit" which is her perception of a lynching.

So-- if you can give some more details about the show, your age, gender, etc, I might have more suggestions, but these are the ones that comet to mind.

If you mean old as in Tin Pan Alley, 1920s, the Jazz Era ... try 'I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate,' that's a fun song.

Also:
1) Ella Fitzgerald - Misty
2) Billie Holiday - I'll Be Seeing You
3) Laura Cantrell - The Whiskey Makes You Sweeter
4) Patti Page - Let Me Call You Sweetheart
5) Nina Simone - Black is the Color (a great Irish ballad .. also check out the version by Espers)

and you're thinking of Etta James - "At Last"

Depends on your audience. If they are in their 60's + then suggest songs by Cole Porter Jerome Kern and the like, what I term evergreens, songs from old musicals that have melody. You could ask your grandparents for their ideas. Generally sing something that is well known and they could join in if you wanted them to.

i always thought johnny cash was cool for a 60s singer. try "ring of fire" or "walk the line".

also, patsy cline is another good old singer. "Crazy". "These Boots Are Made for walking"

if you're female then how about that mr. sandman song? you know "Oh mr. sandman, bring me a dream! Make him the cutest that i've ever seen." had a nice beat

the 50s are as far back as i can go. which isn't bad since i was born 20 years after them. lol
