ok - except 2nd one I would say
John's present was given to him by mary
ps what happened to Emily?

To maintain the parallel and for the sake of accuracy, the second sentence should read: "John was given a present by Emily."

The name- Mary, in the sentence in passive form should be changed to Emily to get the right sense. An active Emily should not metamorphose in to a passive Mary.

i think it would have been better to have written the 2nd sentence as- A present was given to John by Emily/Mary.
that would be correct going by the rules of grammar.

That looks right to me. But to be consistent I would have said the present was given by Emily.

Actice should be like this

Emily give a present to john

Passive

A present of john given by Emily.
