Dell laptops. Go to there website and you can find some really great deals. My fiance and I got a laptop for my cousins 16th birthday present and we found an excellent one that was light weight CD/DVD burner and all the good stuff. less than 600 bucks. Hope that helps. You can also compare some prices to the new HP laptops too. It all depends on what exactly she's gonna be needing it for, is she gonna have to carry it around school and so on. If you live in the United States, check out the CostCo website. I got my laptop, which has wireless, DVD/RW-CD/RW, plus tons of other stuff and a two year manufacturers warranty (which has come in handy!) a year ago for under $1,000.
Also check Dell.com for deals and your local Sunday newspaper for deals, since Christmas is coming up... most of the electronics stores (like Best Buy, etc.) are offering deals.

try comet if you are in the uk they hav a great laptop made by acer for £395 with a dvd and cd rewrite aswell as 1 of ram, a 60 gig hard drive as well as a 1.6 gigahertz processor. standard delivery is free within 5-7 days but ours came after 2 days i think. hears a link to it http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=362972&tab=specification
