I bought a 2002 Ford F150 King Ranch in September 2006. I drove it about 4,000 miles with no problems except for a slight hesitation when driving between 35-40 miles an hour. On Sunday, the Service Engine Soon light came on. I didn't drive it after that except to take it to the dealer for service on Tuesday. They said the #1 and #8 cylinders were misfiring. They replaced 2 coils and the fuel filter. They also gave it a tune up. I picked up the car, paid them $780.00. I drove it about twenty miles and the engine suddenly gave a loud clucking sound. It continued to clunk while it was turned on. I parked it and got a ride home. Now what? What does it mean, what can I do?

You should call them and have them pay for the towing. If they did something to it, they are liable. And should be happy to fix it.

If it's making a loud clunking sound I wouldn't be driving it. I'd be getting it towed. We can't diagnose from here but a loud knocking could be bad news indeed, so it's better to get a tow than risk having a big end or something let go and knocking a hole in the side of the engine block...

They could be liable if they messed something up or didn't check that your oil level was right, but it's also possible (but unlikely) that this is a completely independent failure. Don't jump to conclusions, in other words, but still be VERY supicious that they screwed up somewhere.

I'd also love to know what on earth they mean by a tune up... These things have electronic engine management systems and the old-style 'tuneup' just doesn't exist for a car that recent...

$780 is a lot of brass for a couple of coils and a fuel filter by the way. The labor on the job would be minimal, so what did they charge you for the parts? Check out the prices on one of the big auto parts websites and you'll see what I mean. I know that the filter is available for $11.95 ...How much did they charge you for yours?

in all possibility not the tranny. i might circulate slowly below and verify the u-joints. grab ahold of the force shaft in front of the u-joint on the rear end. jointly as hoding it firmly, attempt to circulate it up & down and to the section. If the u-joints are out, you would be waiting to circulate it and observe the u-joints shifting. try this forwarad on the forward component of the force shaft the place it is going into the tranny additionally. good good fortune!

misfiring caused wrist pins to wear out. you need a crate engine. They should have stuck with a coil, distributor, and modulator. But Chinese parts are cheaper.

take the truck back and explain what is going on, and be sure to tell them that it wasn't making the clunking noise untill after after you picked it up.
