How does one apply the social theory for or against the case of gay marriage?

I just want to know how you argue either way, I dont have to believe/not believe it myself.

Against -- marriage is a core institution of society and its primary purpose is to bring up children. Sex needs to be contained within marriage or else promiscuity, STDs and all sorts of social problems develop.

For -- marriage is a core institution of society and a basic social right (and rite) in our culture. Gay people should have equal rights to it. Gay couples are just as likely to benefit from marriage *** straight and should not be excluded from the prevalent social contract. Gay sex is no more likely to cause STDs than straight sex.

You would have to bring religion and predominate community ideals (majority rule).
