Yeah, it's among the best times to come over to Malaysia. Shopping carnival.....loads of shopping to be had.
And don't forget the glorious food that would go hand in hand with that whole adventure.
There's a new hotel at Mid Valley ( a shopping mall in KL ) called The Boulevard. Visited a friend staying there and found it to be a nice experience, very safe and good service. Be sure to book well in advance though for it's quite a hit with those on a shopping spree, simply for the sheer convinence.
FYI, the cinema there has movies playing till really late. Again, very practical.
Cheers!

jan 1 - 6 is 'not' the best time to visit Malaysia if your looking for shopping ;)..why i say this is because The Malaysian Mega Sale Carnival (when every shop in Major cities are giving discounts) starts july 1 - september 2 .but the prices here are still reasonable..and it depends on what type of shopping your looking at.(dont worry, alot of shops still give discounts after the mega sale period)
here's a link thats dead usefull.www.tourism.gov.my.
here's another link thats also a bit of use. malaysiantourism.ca/portal2/ff8080810bce22f1010bcea63204003e_Visit_Malaysia_2007...

Don't worry too much about sales....the prices are decent enough. Also, do go to Petaling Street, though do try going there with a local. Sunway Pyramid, all of KL, the food in Pinang, Langkawi and a few islands like Pangkor, Redang and so on are a must.

Questions kinda open. What is the main purpose of the visit. Shopping? Sight seeing? Relaxing? Do you want to stay in one spot or move around? Beach or city? Island or mainland? Budget?
