After graduation I deserted, and have been living in various countries abroad. A drill instructor was physically abusing some of the recruits and was clearly disciplining certain recruits for reasons which clearly reflected personal spiteful intentions. One recruit, who graduated, was a habitual bed-wetter whom everybody, including the the drill instructors, were aware of. During training the recruits were coerced into lying and not reporting illegal or immoral activities taking place, which had to be reported to both the officers and non-commissioned officers in charge. The senior drill instructor instructed recruits to modify our weapons, by cutting the recoil springs shorter, in order to improve our overall platoon shooting range scores. Modifying federal property is a federal offense, yet our superiors instructed us, as they previously had, to not report such violations. I reported these activities; yet it became clear these issues would be swept under the rug. Do not enlist.

You should not go public unless you are prepared for further harassment and, perhaps, an effort at extradition (possible in some NATO countries, or by misrepresenting your own acts as something criminal and not political). The fact is that surprisingly few people will care. As a result of events in the Iraq war the military have lost any reputation they had among neutral people at home and abroad.

If you have acquired the nationality of your new country of residence, then you have substantial protection. Most deserters I have known have sought a foreign nationality as soon as feasible -- generally after marriage abroad, a few years' residence, and learning the new language.

It has now been publicized that the military are accepting recruits with serious mental problems, just to meet their quota. The events you describe simply don't make a difference and won't generate concern, much less outrage.

Sorry.

The only way to get these thing investigated is to get an investigation started. To do that they have to have a reason...investigation the abuses you just mentioned as part of a courts marshal is probably the only way. Expect to do some time in Levinworth...(Kansas, shudder) but it is probably the only way to get the people responsible for those abuses dealt with....You took an oath when you joined up...and getting those people out of positions to do what they have done falls under the umbrella of that oath. Doing what is right isn't always easy...but it what has to be done for the greater good....

anyone in the military will know that you are lying akmed, drill instructors might kick ya in the *** but that is done with love. They would never allow a recruit to modify the weapon, that's a lie, so the rest must be also. they never wanted YOU to enlist. pray for a terminal illness and if there is a god he will grant your wish.

Stop hiding and take your punishment, and try and move on with your life. You can't go on the rest of your life hiding, eventually your past will catch up to you. Turn yourself in. The political climate after yesterday's election is changed now, your punishment might not be as bad as you think. Try and get a general discharge, and fight it if you think you are right and get a good lawyer.

i would reommend it - this way it can be proven or disproven. realize though, you will have a lot of guff. hpoefully you are man enough to stand up for your beliefs. since you ran from the Corps, i'm not sure if you could withstand the pressures. since it's only been two years i'm quite shocked at your stories. this is not the corps it used to be back in the 80's or even 90's - sorry but i don't buy it.

I don't think you had the intestinal fortitude to stay and that is why you became a deserter.
You make excuses for leaving and blame others.
Good riddance.
DON'T COME BACK.
