virtual memory is that space on your hard disk that your computer can use is as if it was RAM.
this is very useful for computers that have very less actual RAM.
suppose you have 512mb of RAM and you set your virtual memory to 512 mb. them your total memory would be 512 + 512 = 1024 ie 1gb. this is helpful in running programs that require large amount of memory.
but programs that are running on virtual memory are slightly slow because access times of data on a hard disk is more than that of a RAM. so although you may be able to rum a large program but it would'nt run as fast as it would have run if there was 1gb actual RAM.

if u have windows xp/2000 virtual mem is the same with the "page file" ...so the page file is a file on the HDD that is find on C:\ ...what this file those is to enlarge the RAM memory so the file act like a 128 MB DDR

easy is a memory on the HDD
