Look at the first few pages there shound be some numbers, if the numbers run 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 than it is a first edition

First published ( if it has this in the copyright page its is not a first edition) tells you when the first edition came out then it is usually followed by copyright information, if your book has only has one date in it you can be fairly sure it is a first edition, however copyright was not used in very old books as far as I am aware, then you need to get into type set etc to work it out.
Try an ISBN (international system of book numbering) search on the net if you are unsure, the again this is a more recent development , but it will give you the publishing details. Also you could try the publishers, but I would only do this if I had no other choice.

Just look at the first/second page in the book. Where you find the year the book was written/published in you often find the edition too.

On the back of the title page for early books there should be a date if there is only one date it is a first, however if it says reprint or 2nd or 3rd etc imprint then it is'nt. Later books e.g. from 1990s onwards have a line of numbers e.g. 10987654321 or 12345678910 if the first or last digit is a one then it is a first. There are books you can buy form ebay etc which goes into condition etc.

A book can be identified as a first edition in most cases if it has a number or letter sequence that determines its reprint history. A number line that starts at "1" or "A" such as "123456789", "1357908642" or "ABCDEFGH" indicates a first edition.

Good question. When it's printed inside "First published etc", is that refering to that edition or to a previous one? I've never been clear about it.
