Negativity breeds negativity. If you're negative around my workplace you are ignored and basically shunned.

I have, in the past, met with the individual and asked if they were happy here. If the reply was yes, then I gently stated that I didn't want to pry however I had some concerns because (fill in the blanks here with the exact problem). I would then remind the person that they were a valued employee and also a role model to the other employees and as such it is imporant to keep a positive attitude and to make positive statements. As the meeting was closing, I let the employee know that I welcomed discussion but that areas of concern need to be brought up in an appropriate manner to the appropriate parties. We would go over chain of command and I would end the meeting with a reiteration of my expectations and also a positive comment. I would meet with the person, again infomally whenever I saw a set back and praise them for handling situations in a correct manner. I work in Social Services so my employees are often unaware that federal and state mandates preclude us from doing some of the things employees might want us to implement. Sometimes, taking a moment out to explain why something is done in a certain manner is all it takes. Also, if you have staff meetings, remind your employees of your expectations and give praise when it is do. Positive reinforcement can work wonders in building better employees. Good Luck, I know it's stressful.

I will handle them with a lot of diplomacy. this is because in the course of their development, a lot may have hapened that initiates their negativity, and their orientation and development were affected. I will also instil a course of action towards positivity that will be of benefit to them. when this diplomatic act is not accepted over time, I will terminate their appointment.

Empower them by giving them closed ended questions.
For example, don't say, get that to my desk tomorrow by 8am, say would you like to finish this project by tomorrow or finish this other task?
