Last week I switched the pricetags on hockey stick I wanted from $100 to $25. I felt guilty at the time and almost didn't go through with it, but I did and now I feel horrible. I didn't get caught or anything, but I've always been a good person (I'm 19)...I've never stolen anything in my life, I don't do drugs, I go to school and try to be a kind and caring individual. I'm getting anxiety attacks over this not because I'm afraid of getting caught but because I'm starting to doubt my own character. I really want to repay this item, but I fear that that act alone won't change the fact that I DID DO IT, and that thought terrifies me; I don't want to be a bad person. I'm not a religious person, so this isn't about not want to be a sinner; I just don't want to be that kind of person. I want to pay the store the 80 dollars I owe them but I don't want to get in any trouble for what I did. What can I do?

Although you stole something it's definitely very admirable of you to wish to pay the store back. I'm sure if you took the hockey stick back in you could say that you made a mistake and realized the price difference and offer to pay the store back. Perhaps then you will get a little closure. Really though, don't feel that bad at all... you seem like a really good person!

To put your consciences at peace go back to the store. You should not get into trouble. Explain that the hockey stick had a wrong price tag on it. Do not go into details, so you do not have to lie, the less you say the better.
Make it simple - wrong price tag, you don't feel good about it & would like to pay the diference of $75.
Alternatevely you can return to the sore the stick for $25 refund & then purchase another one for the correct price!

You are not alone. Lots of people do just what you did, why? Because you felt the price was too expensive and the alternative of changing price tags was easy. Don't give yourself an anxiety attack! Look at it this way; you did pay for the item, maybe not the inflated price, but you didn't steal it! Who saw you? This is between you and your God (if your conscience is bothering you and you go back to the shop, what is the point. I don't think you are a bad person, everyone in their teenage years has stolen something. Put it behind you now because you are not a thief. These shops boost the prices on sporting goods up to 300%. If you go back you will have a record and could go to the slammer.
The shops rip us off, I don't believe you ripped them off. Peace be still.

You can do only one thing to repay yourself, and I am Giving you this advice because I am greatly influenced by Gandhiji. The only thing is to tell the store owner the truth, beg for forgiveness, and return the stick, or pay the full price, or the penalty too, for your bad deed. You did a wrong thing, and you HAVE to make it right. Giving the stick back will ensure you did the right thing, and telling the truth will cleanse your mind of all worries. If you don't have the courage to tell the shop owner, write a letter to him, that is a must. It may sound a very fearful thing to do, but trust me, you will feel very, very happy that you have done this, and you also will win the heart of the people because you had the courage to tell the truth. Go ahead and do this.

As I see it you have three choices:
Live with the guilt and learn the lesson.
Try to pass it off as a mistake-"a friend bought this same thing and the price was different-was there an error?".
Be completely honest and accept whatever consequences.
Can't make the choice for you.

If you are prepared to repay to the shopkeeper, with an appropriate apology, he will only be too happy to accept it and condone your mistake. I put myself in the shoes of the shop keeper. I would love to see a transformed person owning up his guilt rather going after him, for the misdeed committed by him, which i could not detect myself. Unmindful of the consequences, you can proceed with your plan for confession.

You could mail the difference in cash back to the store (preferably by money order) in an envelope without your address....

The mere fact that you admit your guilt tells me that you're not bad at all.
Try ridding yourself and your conscience by giving the difference to charity.
Someone will understand.
And, hopefully, forgive.
