1. List/name all countries refered to as southern countries

1.1 Southern countries - definition problems
We are talking about those countries that used to be called the Third World. As with many sensitive areas, the view of what is the appropriate descriptive term changes. So we have seen various expressions used based on:
(a) economic development (non-industrialized countries, least developed countries, undeveloped countries, mal-developed countries, underdeveloped countries, developing countries, emerging nations);
(b) geographical location (southern countries, the Global South, the South);
(c) comparative size (two-thirds world, the Majority World).

1.2 Whatever the term used, we are referring to those nations with the smallest UN Human Development Index (HDI) in the world. Nevertheless, there may not be universal agreement about a simple north/south split.
(a) exclusions - these are the regions/countries that have to be excluded
(i) The former First World / the developed world - USA, Canada, western Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, etc.
(ii) South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore
(iii) the Gulf oil emirates

(b) inclusions -
(i) Eastern Europe
(ii) Russia
(iii) China
(iv) Latin America, including Mexico
(v) Africa
(vi) most of Asia including Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand

2. What is south-south co-operation?
South-south co-operation is simply the nations of the Global South helping each other. The idea grew in the late 1990s, when it was realised that poor nations might find appropriate, low-cost and sustainable solutions to their problems in other developing countries, rather than in the rich north. For example, India, with its huge pool of specialist expertise in drilling boreholes, could help African farmers access water resources, as a sensible alternative to expensive European water engineers. Chinese and South African enterprises are extensively involved in developing other countries' economies in Africa. Here is one webpage, but the internet has a lot of information on this, if you do a search.
