it sure looked different the other day compared to 10-20 years ago...it was a bit frightening when every other car that drove by had loud rap music blaring, ice cold stares and looked like there might be guns in the trunk...

they are still there. They are just more quiet these days. Berkely is still hippie friendly, but not as much as it was before. the student body is left leaning but not radical in general. Others moved to the suburbs and you can tell becuase those districts used to vote republican and now anything within an hour of sf is democratic..

Go over to Haight-Ashbury and check the prices of the Victorian houses...the places you're thinking about, inhabited by the people you miss are now $750,000 Bed & Breakfasts owned(as someone else said) by converts who now think more about their protfolios than they do about social issues and grassroots politics.
